Summer Dreams Beach Card

Hi Everyone! I made a Summer Beach Card for the new card challenge over at Creates and Makes! This challenge is Anything Goes with Option Create a Sentiment

It’s been hot here in the Bay Area, Ca lately and it put me in the mood to make a Beach Card. I have fond childhood memories of Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and I made this card with my wonderful memories in mind!

I love the rides at the boardwalk and the fries-in-a-cup are absolutely classic. The gigantic jaw breakers were a must to enjoy (I know, really hazardous!). We used to play at the music concerts at the beach bandstand and it was fun to watch the groups play later in the evening under the stars. The haunted castle ride was enjoyed more for the rides than the horror. My friend and I would ride in sarcasm and we would scream bloody murder inside as if it were the scariest thing… The sky glider was my absolute favorite ride traveling from one end of the beach to the other.

Here is a video of the “scary” Haunted Castle Ride at Santa Cruz: Haunted Castle Ride
. I didn’t make this video but I thought it was fun to visit the ride again through the video!

Here is the Sky Glider over at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk: Sky Glider at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

If you’re in the mood to experience a Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk concert, watch this video: Free Friday Night Bands.

So here is my card example:

Here is another angle of this card:

And another Angle:

Here is the walk through!:
I started with using this wonderful paper from Echo Park Summer Fun Collection. This is the background of the card. This sheet is called Sweet Treat (because of the ice cream cones behind it).

I used this “Summer Dreams are Made of This” journaling card as a Sentiment. This journal card is from Echo Park Summer Dreams Collection.

I cut the Sentiment with a Die Cut:

I used Distress Inks to give the wood an aged look. I used the colors Old Paper and Antique Linen.

I used a wood grain embossing folder to add texture to the paper:

I used a Netting Die Cut over white copy paper:

I also aged the Netting Paper with Distress Inks:

I attached the Netting to the Wood Paper using a few dots of glue.

I attached 2 Pieces of Burlap with glue

I aged the Card Sentiment with Distress Ink:

I added Sparkle to the Sentiment with Mod Podge Extreme Glitter:

I drew a pair of flip flops with gel pen, colored with a spectrum noir marker and aged it with Distress ink and put it in a Bottle Cap.

I made a pair of Starfish with tropical flowers die cuts and pink scrap paper:

I glued Snowflakes to the star fish from an Embellishment Pack that I had.

I attached the Sentiment to the card with a Glue Dot Sticker:

Then I attached the Flip Flops Bottle Cap and the Starfish with Glue:

I added a bow with Bakers Twine:

I attached a pearl to the bow and two tropical flowers from the Embellishment Pack.

Here is the card with the plastic embellishments:

To make the seashells, I used a scallop circle die:

I attached a small rectangle to the scallop circle:

I used an embossing pad and an embossing pen to make score lines on the shell.

I used distress ink on the sea shell. I rolled a small piece of paper and added distress ink to make the rolled shell.

To make the sand, I used a teaspoon of salt:

I spread Mod Podge glue on the area where I wanted the sand to be:

I sprinkled the salt over the Mod Podge glue:

I lightly dropped brown water color paint into the sand with a paint brush. The watercolor drop spreads as a reaction to the salt so I didn’t need too much.

Here is a picture of a painted section. The sand is still wet…:

For the bottle cap sunglasses, I drew a pair of sunglasses on a white circle paper. (I used a die cut for the circle).

I added polka dots on the circle with gel pens:

I used distress ink to age the paper:

I attached the picture to the inside of the bottle cap and added a clear Epoxy sticker to the top :

I attached the bottle cap to the card and it’s all finished!:

  • Oh wow– amazing little work of art! Your handmade embellies are awesome, and your process images are terrific. I grew up in the central valley of CA, and we used to do the Boardwalk every summer… Ahhh, the Giant Dipper, the log ride, the TAFFY! (Do you remember they used to sell the taffy in the lime green box?) Thanks for the memories, and thanks for sharing at SOS!
