Grunge Clean and Simple Dragon Thinking of You Card

Hi Everyone,
Happy Sunday! Today I participated in a Grunge CAS card challenge. I used an adorable FREE Digital Stamp Dragon from Make Breaks (link at the end of this post). I liked that this little guy was sad. I thought it fit with the grunge theme. Although happy grunge cards work too!

Here is my card walk through:
I started with an empty white space. This is a Clean and Simple Challenge, so I chose to make both the card and the layer white.

I used a Tim Holtz (perfect for grunge, right?) Burlap embossing folder from Sizzix, and embossed the corner where the dragon was going to be placed. I thought about a grungy wall behind the dragon. I would have liked to emboss the whole thing, but I think that would have been too much for a CAS card?

This embossing folder gave a nice deep indentation. I use the Cuttlebug for my embossing.

I wanted the layer to have a grungy appearance while maintaining it’s original color. So I the edge of a ruler to scrape along the 4 edges of the card.

I used purple and blue watercolor paint to color the embossing area. I wanted a scratchy effect with the paint so I deposited the moist paint on a scrap paper first until the moisture would disappear and the brush gave a scratchy affect – and then moved the brush to the card. Notice that the paint brush hairs begin to group together giving the brush tip a “frazzled” appearance.

I just kept the strokes left to right. I had to gather more paint and repeat the process because the paint dried out from the brush quickly.

I used a different brush to create the spatter affect. This brush has a flat tip and is made with soft hair. I held the brush over the paper and tapped the top of the brush with my other hand to “throw” the paint off the brush and onto the paper.

I think the brush had a bit too much water on it because some of the droplets came out bigger. It takes practice to get the perfect ratio of paint vs water for the desired affect.

I colored the dragon digital stamp with Spectrum Noir Markers. I made the little circles on his belly with the Blending Pen.

I attached the dragon to the card with double sided tape and used a clear sentiment stamp that says “Thinking of You”. I would have used an I miss you stamp, but I didn’t have one. I used the Eggplant Stampin’ Up Ink Pad.

I entered this card in these challenges:
Addicted to CAS – Challenge# 110 Grunge
Addicted to Stamps – Challenge# 239 Clean and Simple

  • This is absolutely fabulous, Mimi. At first look I thought you used embossing paste. That folder does a deep embossing and it worked beautifully with your dry brushing. The dragon is just darling and well colored. I’m so glad you shared your card with us at Addicted to CAS.

  • What a fantastic card and an awesome tutorial Mimi. Love that embossing folder on the edge. Perfect Grunge!! x Carolyn Bennie
